I know you advised it would be iffy but I thought I may as well give it a shot while I sit here trying all the other options. I contacted the seller and they don't know. Many of the sellers I contact don't know what a serial port is and I just can't quite tell from the picture. It looks like it has a bar in the middle like one did that fit a Toshiba. I am worried about the drivers as well but I guess I'm willing to gamble a little to see if I can luck out with the external drive. Just thought I'd give it a try but I just can't find out what that connector is!

Thanks! I appreciate all the help I'm receiving.

Hi Jaeco,

for your information, as it was cheaper for manufacturers to use a 25 pin RS232 connector as opposed to a Centronics one, gradually these connectors took over.

If you look at the back of a older pc, generally there are two serial ports and one parallel port for the printer.

The gender differs between serial (9 and 25) pin ports and 25 pin parallel ports.

A Centronics connector is very different, see:-

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Micro_ribbon

On no account should a parallel device be connected to a serial port (and vice versa) as voltages differ and the result can be serious toast!

If only you were in London, we would have had it fixed by now!

Good Luck - Mike

Well, I'm ready to move to London!! I'm glad you told me what you did. I .d another parallel port external floppy or what I hope to be a parallel port floppy. Now from what you tell me is something I didn't even know to worry about...that I will THINK this is for the parallel port and that it really be for the serial and I burn up the computer....Maybe the device will say on it if it's parallel!

Hi Jaeco,

if you look at the plug on an external floppy drive, you should be able to tell which pc port it connects with.

Am still concerned if you require a power supply and/or driver(you cannot install).

You advise your problem is caused by a broken floppy drive. Are you sure this is the case? Unless very heavily used, it is rare for one to fail completely. I think in many years I have only had one, maybe two that have failed, such they must be binned.

To re*f*u*r*bish a desktop floppy:-

a) remove from pc, carefully disconnecting power and interface cables

b) if there is a top cover, remove, then blowout any muck with a hairdryer set to cold and maximum blast.

c) gently clean the head(s) with a bent cotton bud/Q-tip dipped in isopropyl alcohol (fluid supplied with cd/dvd cleaning kits)

d) carefully reconnect power and interface cables when replacing drive.

It cannot be that different for a laptop, once drive is removed.

----
Googling:- dismantling laptop

produces many hits, such as:-

As a matter of interest, where in the US of A are you located? I am in Hammersmith, West London.

Good Luck - Mike

The techs say they have to take the laptop totally apart to get to this internal floppy drive. They are afraid or concerned that if they take it apart that a laptop of this age MIGHT not work when they put it back together, and they are also afraid they won't find an internal drive that fits. Since they have any concern over this I am afraid to let them take it apart because I still use this to work everyday!! The internal floppy I obviously need to backup my main work product...which obviously I haven't done....but rarely I need a file off of it but when I need it I need it. I know this issue needs to be resolved sooner rather than later so I can start backing up my work product again...All I need though is this old 386 running DOS...the new software I'd have to buy is very pricey and I hope to retire in a couple years so don't want to spend $$$ on new software and learn it as well. I've used this for 20 years. Sorry to tell you more than you asked...When you put the disk in the internal floppy drive it just sounds like you are revving the engine of a car. I live in TN. Thanks!

Depending on how urgent your need is, a competent tech should be able to extend the wires from inside the computer chassis to a .3.5" disk drive.
That said, your comment about the drive sounding like "revving the engine", could imply that the Floppy drive controller is at fault. This would be a serious "bummer".
Alternatively there are services that specialize in recovering harddrive data.
good luck.

I will suggest the wire extension to the 3.5" disk drive and see what they say. I've had it to two shops and they are unable to retrieve the data from the hard drive. They think it must be encrypted from the software I run. Nothing shows up yet it works fine. Thanks for the suggestion.
