If I want to change my avatar, selecting a picture from an external website works. But when I try to upload a picture from my computer, the process errors out. After the message that says, "Please be patient while the image is uploaded to the server." is displayed, I click OK. Then the uploading stops and the page errors out. Any ideas of the cause?

Hi DOS,

some more details might help. e.g. :-

where you are uploading to.
full filename (including extension) of the picture

suggest attach to your above post?

Googling is helpful. e.g. :-

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Avatar_%28computing%29

I wonder if the picture concerned does does not meet, or exceeds the parameters allowed for a avatar on the site to which you are attempting to upload to. e.g. Pixels appear important.

Good Luck - Mike

Right under the field to link a picture from an external site to use as the avatar, there is a link called "Upload Avatar." I have attempted this with many different pictures. Some are exactly 64x64 pixels, some are .GIF, but mainly .JPGs. Do you have the exact rules for the specifications of acceptable avatars?

I would upload the image, except for this forum software only allows linking images from external sites, not allowing the picture to be referenced locally on the server. I do not know the website in which these pictures came from.

Does your avatar mean you figured it out or were you trying to change it?

Nope, I linked that one from an external site. Now I want to change it to one that's on my computer.

Well, tried linking to a larger picture elsewhere and it didn't work either (probably size), although it previewed properly. The upload avatar button and uploading a small test jpg did fail and that was due to permissions on the old-computer.com server per the asp error message.

edit: I did get an avatar link to work, it's either size restrictions (for linked avatar files) or could be some sites don't allow linking. This is a png right now.

The other thing to try would be a different browser (I'm trying this in Firefox) as far as the upload test went.

Exactly, you've got the error I got. I'm assuming that's something Mike will have to go in and correct.

Hi DOS, as I understand it:-

a)the avatar cannot exceed 64 x 64 pixels

b) you hve to provide a link to it. (Please advise link used)

If either or both the above are incorrect it will not upload.

Presume the link is to a image/picture library. I understand some libraries do not allow downloading from.

Good Luck - Mike

I had the same problem uploading an avatar from a folder on my PC. It uploaded fine after I placed it on the web and pointed to the URL though. Anyway, here's what I got trying to upload from my PC (via Firfox Aurora 16.0a2):

Please be patient while the image is being uploaded to the server

Clicking OK changes the URL to:

http://www.old-computers.com/forum/upload_avatars.asp?PB=Y

And the following is displayed:

The page cannot be displayed
There is a problem with the page you are trying to reach and it cannot be displayed.
