I had what seems to be quite a common problem. After the battery replacement, the device was restored to what is likely a default Japanese set up. I tried the hard reset a couple of times, but they were not close enough, and instead two consecutive hard resets switched the keyboard perfectly to the English character set. I am very grateful the those who proved this workaround was successful. I had the same issue with the Sharp PC-1260. It came up in japanese mode after a battery change. I managed to get it to switch back to ASCII mode by pressing reset a couple of times.

I had the same problem on a Sharp PC-1262. This one was laying around without batteries for several years and with new batteries it went straight to Japanese Modus. Removing the batteries and installing them while holding down the rest button reset the calculator to normal modus.

I just fired up a PC-1260 and got the Japanese characters. However for me a few attempts at resetting with/without holding down a key brought up the European/USA mode. Can''t seem to find a manual in English but I have a 1251 manual so was able to figure out the RSV mode for example.

I just got the same problem described here: Changed batteries and the Sharp PC-1262 came up in Japanese mode instead of European/US mode. I tried several things, but to no avail. In the end, I tried this:
- remove batteries
- set the on/off switch to Pro (or RSV, I''m not sure)
- put the opened PC-1262 upside down in it''s plastic hard cover (to avoid to accidentally press a key
- $ new batteries, but do not slide the battery compartment cover at this moment
- press and hold the all reset switch, at the same time slide the battery compartment cover over the batteries

For me, that worked fine. The PC-1262 came up in European/USA mode again. However, I am not sure about the position of the on/off switch I used.

Hi, I recently got a Sharp pc-1261, and everything so far seems to work...although it''s in Japanese. When I use the Help feature, all the basic terms are in english. There must be a way to switch to English, the reset button doesn''t see to do it.

Thanks

David,

What are the difference between the PC-1260 and 1251 ? Is it hardware or software (instructions) ?

Thanks

«downloadable versions of the programming/operations manual that is in English»: on the net you can find Enlish manual in PDF for PC-1251: operation is near identical to PC-1261 with only a few differences (I can tell you some of the differences).

CyberSpider,

I have a Sharp PC-1261 with CE-125 Printer and Microcassette Interface and all the manuals (3, English). Neither has had a lot of use. I wanted to use them recently but the PC-1261 no longer works correctly, most likely due to bad connections from the 2 segmented rubber strip LCD connectors used in this device. I''ve tried cleaning/re-seating them with very little success. I don''t hold out much hope of getting the 1261 operating again since those connector strips are not a commmonly available item.

I''d be interested in obtaining a working 1261 or 1262 in exchange for good copies of the manuals. Please e-mail if interested to mreilly1@columbus.rr.com.

Thanks

I recently was given several PC-1260, PC-1261, and PC-1262''s, a cassette interfaces and a combo cassette/printer interface. There was no documentation with any of the devices.

Does anyone have a downloadable versions of the programming/operations manual that is in English or translated from German?

Every manual I have found is from bad scans of the German manual which have so far defied any attempt to software convert to searchable pdf and translate. The backgrounds have text imprints from other pages, random dots all over the place, and the images are skewed at various angles.

Please respond here because I think a lot of searchers eventually end up here.

For those stuck in Japanese, one should theoretically be able to just press the reset button on the back and it will be reset to whatever language your localized machine should be. You can change your system between Latin and Japanese characters easily with this program (provided by Pierre of the pocket computer museum forum at pocket.free.fr):

10 " " POKE 12349,10+NOT PEEK 12349: END

The problem is, if you actually have a Japanese one, you will not be able to write it because it types in Japanese. You should be able to shift into Latin characters by pressing Shift than SML, in theory.

This program will run whenever you press DEF and the space key. Make sure you are in PROG mode when you write it and in RUN mode when you want to run it. You can also put it on line 65279 so that you can write other more useful programs without erasing this part.
